\n\tAfter battling nerve damage from Lyme disease<\/a>, Twain underwent a vocal fold medialization procedure in 2018. When Bon Jovi<\/a> faced his own laryngeal nerve problems a few years later, he reached out to the country icon for help.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe two stars first met on an international flight, where Bon Jovi pointed out their shared reputation for being the hardest-working artists in music. \u201cWe just bumped into each other in the aisle, and he said, \u2018Shania, it\u2019s really cool to meet you,\u201d Twain told People<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThat chance encounter left a lasting impression. When Bon Jovi was later diagnosed with severe laryngeal nerve problems, he knew exactly who\u2019d understand what he was going through.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe just called me up and said, \u2018Share everything you know about how you got back singing live after nerve atrophy in the voice,’\u201d Twain<\/a> told People<\/em>. \u201cI shared my surgeon\u2019s information with him, my experience with him, and I encouraged him to weigh up all the scenarios,\u201d she explained. \u201cI told him that it worked for me, and that I was honest. I think he really appreciated that, and was able to take it all on board.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tShe also made sure he knew what to expect during and after the \u201cscary\u201d operation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s an open-throat surgery<\/a>, and you have to be awake,\u201d Twain shared. \u201cI said, \u2018I just have to be honest with you because if you\u2019re going into this, you\u2019re going to hear it from the surgeon anyway, but you might as well hear it from somebody who\u2019s been through it.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBon Jovi underwent the surgery in June 2022 to repair his vocal cord atrophy. In his recent Hulu docuseries, Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story<\/em>, he praised Twain<\/a> as his \u201cspirit sister,\u201d though he joked that she wasn\u2019t entirely truthful about the recovery time.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNot only did she reassure me that it would be OK, but I think she also pulled my leg a little bit because she told me I\u2019d be out there a lot sooner than I have been,\u201d Bon Jovi revealed. \u201cShe says, \u2018Well, I told you that because I knew that you might back out otherwise. And so, I couldn\u2019t wait to get the operation.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe eventually\u00a0returned<\/a> to the stage. Bon Jovi kicked off a Madison Square Garden residency in July, his first live shows since 2022. But on July 23, the band was forced to end their set roughly 90 minutes in after the singer came down with a sinus infection.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for Twain, she fully accepts that her own voice is permanently changed.<\/p>\n
