They were all worried that they wouldn\u2019t see me again. It could all have gone so terribly wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tCollins was initially admitted to the hospital in November 2023 and released days before Christmas. Weeks later, he was back in intensive care for a seven-month stay.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI was very lucky to have come out of that,\u201d he said. \u201cNeedless to say, I haven\u2019t had a drink since.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAccording to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)<\/a>, heavy drinking damages multiple organ systems at once. Prolonged heavy drinking weakens the heart muscle and can result in dangerous liver conditions, including alcohol-associated cirrhosis and alcohol-associated hepatitis. It can also lead to acute pancreatitis, a sudden and dangerous inflammation of the pancreas.<\/p>\n \n\tThe singer has faced these types of alcohol-related health issues before, having gone to intensive care in 2012 with acute pancreatitis. In his 2016 autobiography Not Dead Yet<\/em><\/a>, Collins said that his drinking escalated at age 55 following his first retirement and various personal challenges.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cIt took me until the age of 55 to become an alcoholic,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI got through the heady Sixties, the trippy Seventies, the imperial Eighties, the busy Nineties. I was retired, content \u2014\u00a0 then I fell. Because suddenly, I had too much time on my hands.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tFortunately, the musician is now doing much better. Months later, Collins reunited with his family at the Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge. He recalled his daughter, actress Lily Collins<\/a>, 37, getting emotional during the trip.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cLily was sitting beside me in tears, saying, \u2018I never thought I\u2019d get these moments,’\u201d Collins said. \u201cWe had an incredible time.
