\n\tParis Jackson<\/a> is talking about the reasons behind her past substance abuse<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty<\/em><\/a> podcast, the 28-year-old said her loneliness began when she was just a kid.<\/p>\n

\n\tLooking back, the singer said life began to feel \u201cheavier\u201d when she was around 8 years old \u2014 a few years before the death of her father<\/a>, Michael Jackson.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI remember being surrounded by love and playing Hot Wheels with my brother<\/a>, and then going into my room and being alone for a second and having that sinking, empty feeling,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe shared that this \u201cchronic loneliness\u201d has been a throughline in her life and played a major part in her depression, anxiety, and addiction<\/a>. When trying to describe the feeling, she said, \u201cit sucked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tUsing Substances as a \u201cBand-Aid\u201d\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tTo cope with what she called \u201cunmanageable thoughts and feelings,\u201d Jackson used drugs and alcohol as a \u201cBand-Aid.\u201d She has previously discussed her history with cocaine and opioids like fentanyl.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI feel very deeply, so I think [substances] just brought me to a more moderated [place]\u2026 I could still cry, I could still laugh,\u201d she said. \u201cI think part of it was I simply loved the effect produced by these things, and it just made me feel different than how I was used to feeling, which sucked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tManaging Her Mental Health Today\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tJackson is taking active steps to manage her mental health today. The \u201cZombies in Love\u201d singer told Shetty that she currently sees a behavioral therapist to help manage her OCD symptoms<\/a>. She also opened up about her past treatments, sharing that she underwent electroconvulsive therapy to try to treat her depression.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn January, she celebrated six years clean of alcohol and heroin. At the time, she posted on Instagram<\/a> to remind fans that sobriety doesn\u2019t mean life is suddenly perfect, writing, \u201cIf you\u2019ve got this s\u2014, or anything of the sort, you\u2019re not alone. Hang in there, and if no one\u2019s told you they love you today, I love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWith her new album, Happiest Day of My Life<\/em>, coming out on August 21, Jackson told Shetty she isn\u2019t trying to be a \u201cspokesperson for sobriety.\u201d However, she explained that hearing from others helped her along the way, and she hopes sharing her story can do the same.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHearing other people\u2019s stories has helped me, so if I can pay that forward, [I] absolutely [will],\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
