\n\tFollowing her death<\/a> from an apparent overdose in South Carolina on Sunday, fans and friends are looking back at the chronic pain the actress dealt with on a daily basis.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tThe Stunt That Changed Everything\u00a0\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tIn her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning<\/em><\/a>, which was released in May, the Heroes<\/em> star revealed she sustained lasting damage from a movie stunt gone wrong. While filming the 2005 movie, Racing Stripes<\/em>, Panettiere was thrown from a zebra named Sam.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTrusting that he\u2019d always be the angel I knew him to be, I mounted him without a worry in the world,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAt first things went fine. But when I approached what we called the \u2018mounting pads,\u2019 which were elevated platforms that helped us mount and dismount, Sam bucked \u2014 at the exact moment I tried to hop off him,\u201d she continued. \u201cMy foot was caught in the stirrup, so my body swung up into the air, then came down hard on the ground. I felt an excruciating pain shoot through my back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe accident left her with a concussion, severe whiplash, and two damaged vertebrae in her neck. She was only 14 at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\tA Loss of Mobility\u00a0\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tThe physical issues worsened earlier this year. During a May interview with Women\u2019s Health<\/em><\/a>, Panettiere recalled a morning when she woke up numb from the waist down. She couldn\u2019t lift her foot or bend her toes.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNo one was able to give me a solid answer,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was like that for so long that I was sitting there going, \u2018Oh my gosh, am I going to be paralyzed for the rest of my life?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tConnecting the Pain to Addiction\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tThat unresolved physical pain eventually led to a long battle with addiction. In her book<\/a>, Panettiere acknowledged that the discomfort from her neck injury often triggered an increase in her prescription opioid use.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tShe noted that she was first introduced to drugs at the age of 15, just months after Racing Stripes<\/em> finished filming, when she was given \u201chappy pills\u201d to maintain a high energy level during press interviews. Looking back on her sudden loss of mobility earlier this year, she admitted the ordeal was \u201cthe scariest thing that\u2019s ever happened to me physically, for sure.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the memoir \u2014 published just three months before she died \u2014 the actress made sure her fans finally knew the truth about the physical pain she had been living with since she was 14.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
