\n\tSandra Bullock<\/a> is sharing new details about parenting through her late partner Bryan Randall\u2019s illness.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a recent appearance on the SmartLess<\/em> podcast<\/a>, the actress discussed the reality of keeping his diagnosis a secret. Randall lived with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS<\/a>) before passing away<\/a> in August 2023.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI wasn\u2019t allowed to speak about it. That was the request, and I tried \u2014 I honored it,\u201d Bullock said. She explained that carrying the \u201chuge weight\u201d of his diagnosis was isolating, especially with the global COVID-19 pandemic keeping everyone at home.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI started grieving Bryan<\/a> four years before he passed,\u201d she said. \u201cMy person left a lot earlier than the body left,\u201d adding, \u201cI don\u2019t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you\u2019re just on this treadmill, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tGuiding Her Kids Through Grief\u00a0\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tTaking care of a sick loved one is overwhelming on its own, but trying to protect your kids<\/a> at the same time is a different kind of stress.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBullock has experience caring for sick family members, including her own mother who had cancer, so the clinical reality of the disease wasn\u2019t what scared her. Her biggest worry was how the situation would impact her kids, Louis, 16, and Laila, 12.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt doesn\u2019t scare me \u2014 not the illness itself; it doesn\u2019t scare me. I can see and be around just about anything. But I had two young kids that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw [Randall] as a father figure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe chose to let her kids see the reality of what was happening in their home. She set up his care in their house and did her best to establish a routine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey could see. They have eyes. And they are very, very astute kids,\u201d she shared. \u201cVery astute because they not only see the physical change, [but] there\u2019s a behavior that changes in all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tSetting Safe Boundaries\u00a0\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tBoth teenagers processed the grief in their own ways, and Bullock gave them the freedom to set their own limits.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLouis recognized early on that watching the daily progression of the disease was detrimental to his well-being.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLouis handled it very differently than Laila. About two years before Bryan passed, he saw it was a dynamic that wasn\u2019t healthy for him to be around,\u201d she said. \u201cHe smartly disengaged himself and said, \u2018This is a safer space for me to sit.\u2019 And I said, \u2018Absolutely, you go. I got this.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tShe made sure he never felt the pressure to become the man of the family during the crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLaila handled things differently and chose to stay closely involved for much longer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLaila, on the other hand, was more bonded until about six months out,\u201d she said. When the time came that Laila needed a break, she asked her mom if it was okay to say \u201cno\u201d to visiting his care area. Bullock immediately gave her permission to step away.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe told her daughter, \u201cIf you do wanna go visit, I will come with you, and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
