\n\tBusy Philipps<\/a> is honoring the memory of her late Dawson\u2019s Creek <\/em>co-star<\/a> James Van Der Beek<\/a> by reminding fans to stay on top of their health \u2014 a message that caught the attention of his widow<\/a>, Kimberly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actress recently revealed she had surgery<\/a> to remove a 2.6-centimeter brain tumor that doctors caught during a full-body scan earlier this year and revealed the surprising connection her diagnosis had with her late co-star. Following the news, Kimberly Van Der Beek reached out to offer a sweet show of public support.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\tAn Unexpected Push to Get Scanned\u00a0\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tPhilipps admitted to nearly canceling the February health screening altogether. The appointment was scheduled for the morning after Van Der Beek died at age 48 from stage III colorectal cancer<\/a>. Unsure if she should go, Philipps asked her ex-husband, Marc Silverstein, for advice.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMaybe it\u2019s the best thing you could do for your friend this morning,\u201d Silverstein told Philipps at the time. \u201cGo get that scan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFortunately, she took his advice. Doctors found a grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare type of slow-growing tumor. According to Philipps\u2019 neuro-oncologist, the mass, while considered malignant (cancerous), had the \u201cbest prognosis of all the malignant gliomas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s sort of defined as a cancerous tumor based on the ability of the tumor to regrow over time, rather than it looking very malignant under the microscope,\u201d Dr. Miller told People<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\tPhilipps shared that losing someone so close to her changed how she views self-care and daily life.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSee doctors, get checkups, like, make sure that you\u2019re taking care of your body and your health, and if something feels off, go get it checked out,\u201d Philipps told Us Weekly<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIt seems like Kimberly Van Der Beek co-signs that message, and James\u2019 role in Philipps\u2019 diagnosis. \u201cWe love you @busyphilipps, and you got angels in heaven,\u201d Kimberly commented on an Instagram post<\/a> shared by People.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\t\tFacing Recovery Setbacks\u00a0\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tThe road to recovery didn\u2019t go as smoothly as she hoped. Just a month after her brain surgery, Philipps developed a staphylococcus infection along her incision line that required her to get a follow-up procedure to clear the wound.<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite the setback, she kept a lighthearted attitude, jokingly asking People<\/em><\/a>, \u201cWhat am I? The luckiest girl in the world?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tMoving Forward With Perspective\u00a0\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tManaging a serious medical diagnosis while grieving a close friend reshaped how Philipps approaches her daily routine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[It] really sort of instills in you that every day is all you have,\u201d she said. \u201cYou need to live your life with that understanding and move through the world in a way that reflects that you get that. So I do try to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBy turning a tragic loss into a clear reminder about early detection, Philipps continues to encourage others to schedule routine checkups and advocate for their well-being.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
