She\u2019s already awake.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMom? Mom? Are you still sleeping?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe if I stay really quiet, I can sneak in a few more moments of sleep.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI got dressed. Ate my breakfast. And fed the cat.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, it seems like today has started without me.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She sounds happy. And she\u2019s dressed and fed. This is a good start.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wonder how early she got up today. Please don\u2019t let the pain in her side have been the reason for the early start.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow\u2019s your side today? Are you ready for school?\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s fiiiiine, Mom. I don\u2019t need any medicine.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t think Mom believes me. But I really want to swim today. I have to be OK.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope that\u2019s true. She does look OK, though.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Math. ELA. Social Studies. Coffee. Breakfast. Email. The rest of the morning passes by in a blur.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wish I had slept better last night. My forehead is starting to throb, and the familiar feeling of nausea is creeping up. I know I have my migraine rescue meds around here somewhere, I just need to find them, and fast.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t get comfortable.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This math question is too hard.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hate when my side hurts. I just want it to go away.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do her cheeks look red? Are her eyes tired? She\u2019s sure fidgeting a lot.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo you need medicine? You look tired.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo, Mom, I said I\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t want her to know it\u2019s getting big again.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the laptop closed, I let out a breath I didn\u2019t realize I was holding. We made it through another morning of school.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then I see it. Her cheeks and nose are bright red. Her eyes are tired and glazed over. Her speech is loud and short. Before I have time to process, the meltdown is happening.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hate this pain.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s never going to get better.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one believes me.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI DON\u2019T LIKE MY SIDE. FIX IT. FIX IT RIGHT AWAY.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We waited too long. She pushed too hard. I should have known. I should have seen it coming.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t seem to find her medication fast enough. Between the screaming, crying, and throwing of objects, my own head is pulsing. If only I could find some way to help her.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI AM NOT GOING TO TAKE A NAP. I WILL NOT CALM DOWN.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMAKE. THIS. PAIN. STOP.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After what feels like an eternity, but is really just an hour, we are both exhausted. The screaming has stopped. The medication is starting to work. Her body is starting to settle.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time, anyway.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is insisting on food before nap. But I just want to sleep. We both need it right now.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course she\u2019s hungry. Of course I have to feed her. Of course I am nauseous from my migraine. Of course, a sandwich gets made anyway.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhy are you hiding under the pillows?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do I explain that my head has its own pulse, the light coming through the window hurts my eyes, and every sound feels entirely too loud?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have a headache.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wish Mom didn\u2019t get her headaches. I don\u2019t like it when her head hurts.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s naptime. Finally. I\u2019ve been waiting for this all day.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She sleeps for 2 hours.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I sleep for 20 minutes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My head is starting to hurt less. The fatigue isn\u2019t.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, as she settles onto the couch to watch TV, I crawl to my desk to log onto my computer.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She grabs a snack. I remember I should probably drink some water.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her body is still recovering from the morning.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mine is, too.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I need to lead my support group in 20 minutes. And I need this almost as much as they do.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We talk about lots of things today. Pain. Parenting. Grief. Values. Identity.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We start talking about the things that matter most to us.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does matter the most to me?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then I hear that sweet voice whispering outside my door, and I remember.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMommy? Are you still in your meeting?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI really want to swim still.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A mad dash around the house ensues. Swimsuits. Towels. Goggles. Everything gets dumped in the bag as we race out the door.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s only a quick drive across town. But I can\u2019t stop checking the rear-view mirror.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know she really wants to swim, but is it worth it?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAre you excited for swim?\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t tell her my side is hurting again. I want to swim in the big pool today.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes! And my side only hurts a 5 right now.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deep breaths. A quick swim. Beautiful clouds.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 30 minutes, I see my kid just being a kid. She\u2019s learning new swim strokes. She\u2019s diving to the bottom of the pool. Her face is full of laughter and snotty pool bubbles. She\u2019s happy. And this is what makes it worth it.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then it\u2019s a quick shower. Pajamas. She\u2019s asleep within minutes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now I slowly pick up the pieces of the day. School stuff from the morning. Wet swimsuits and towels. Pieces of uneaten snacks. Items thrown about during the meltdown.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My body is screaming out in pain. My brain is exhausted. I don\u2019t know if I want a hug or a good cry.
