\n\tDuring an Oct. 14 appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends<\/em><\/a>, the actress discussed her recent brain tumor diagnosis and the emotional conversations she had with her two daughters<\/a>. Philipps shares Birdie, 18, and Cricket, 13, with her ex-husband Marc Silverstein.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tMaking a Promise to Her Daughter\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tPhilipps found out about the grade 2 oligodendroglioma in February and had the tumor removed on March 2. At the time of the diagnosis<\/a>, her oldest daughter Birdie was home on a break from boarding school.<\/p>\n

She graduated from high school,\u201d Philipps shared on the talk show. \u201cSo this was all happening in February, and my surgery was March 2. She actually was in boarding school, and she was home on a break when we found out and when I had the surgery, and she stayed an extra week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cShe\u2019s in this moment in her life where her life is just starting,\u201d Philipps said. \u201cI think all of a sudden being hit with the reality that something could be really, terribly wrong with her mom may be the scariest thing for any kid to confront.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPhilipps, who first shared her diagnosis publicly in an August People<\/em><\/a> interview, said Birdie was \u201cbeside herself\u201d and \u201coverwhelmed with emotion.\u201d To help ground her, Philipps made a very specific promise.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI just kept saying to her, \u2018You\u2019re not in the movie where your mom dies the senior year of high school. I just promise you,’\u201d she continued. \u201c\u2018You\u2019re in the movie where a brain tumor and then is on a TV show.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tTwo Very Different Reactions\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tHer youngest daughter, Cricket, took a decidedly different approach to the news.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHer reaction when I told her was like, \u2018Okay. You\u2019re going to be fine?’\u201d Philipps said. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018I\u2019m totally going to be fine.\u2019 And she\u2019s like, \u2018Okay.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPhilipps added that her own initial reaction was far less calm. \u201cI was like hyperventilating and trying to breathe,\u201d she recalled of first hearing the diagnosis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actress ultimately underwent surgery just weeks before she was set to begin filming the new legal procedural Cupertino<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
