\n\tMartin Short<\/a> is sharing the painful reality of navigating life after the loss of a child.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Wednesday, Oct. 14, the 76-year-old actor attended the fourth annual Rare Impact Fund Benefit<\/a> in Los Angeles. During the charity event, his Only Murders in the Building<\/em> co-star Selena Gomez took the stage to debut a new award dedicated to Short\u2019s daughter, Katherine, who died by suicide<\/a> at age 42 in February.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt has been a very difficult year for me, needless to say,\u201d Short told the crowd. \u201cIt has been the heartbreak of our family, as you can imagine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGomez created \u201cThe Katherine Short Legacy Award\u201d to recognize individuals making a tangible impact in their communities.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMarty has been my friend for many years, and I know how deeply he loves his family,\u201d Gomez said before inviting him up to present the inaugural honor. \u201cI\u2019m very grateful that he\u2019s here tonight to help us present it for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen Short joined her at the microphone, he praised her as \u201cone of the most brilliant women in the world\u201d before turning his focus to Katherine\u2019s memory. He told the audience that his daughter worked as a clinical social worker and spent her career advocating for open, compassionate conversations around mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tReframing Mental Illness as a Disease\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tShort also spoke about how society views psychological struggles. He compared his daughter\u2019s experience to the ovarian cancer battle that claimed the life of his late wife<\/a>, Nancy Dolman, in 2010.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cKatherine fought for so long with extreme mental health issues, borderline personality [disorder], other things \u2014 and she did the best she could until she couldn\u2019t,\u201d Short shared. \u201cMental health and cancer, which took my wife, for example, are both diseases. They are diseases, and sometimes diseases are terminal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe emphasized that psychological conditions are \u201csimply an illness\u201d that should never be hidden in the shadows or treated as a source of family embarrassment.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Short acknowledged that the grief<\/a> will never fully go away, he found comfort in a quote from Dolly Parton.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe great Dolly Parton once said, \u2018Grief is love with no place to go,’\u201d he told the crowd. \u201cMy pain about losing my daughter will always be present in my heart, and I think that\u2019s simply because what we deeply love we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
