\n\tThe memoir will be published on November 3, nearly nine months after Dane\u2019s death<\/a> on February 19 at age 53. He publicly announced his diagnosis in April 2025.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe recalled hearing Gayheart cry on the other end of the line. She told him, \u201cI\u2019m here, we\u2019ll fight this together, I\u2019m not going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018 after 14 years of marriage, but they continued to co-parent their daughters<\/a>, Billie and Georgia, and take family vacations. Dane wrote that their separation hadn\u2019t changed their commitment to their family.<\/p>\n

\n\tDane wrote that he first noticed trouble with his right hand while eating sushi with his daughters on January 7, 2024. He initially blamed texting, but a few weeks later he could no longer hold the chopsticks.<\/p>\n

\n\tALS<\/a> affects the nerve cells that control voluntary muscle movement, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke<\/a>. As those cells deteriorate, people develop muscle weakness that worsens over time. The disease can eventually affect the ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe.<\/p>\n

\n\tThere\u2019s currently no cure<\/a>, though treatments can help manage symptoms, and some may slow its progression.<\/p>\n
