Patricia Heaton is getting honest about the exact moment she knew it was time to quit drinking for good.

The 68-year-old Everybody Loves Raymond star recently opened up about how a humiliating evening with her family ultimately forced her to reevaluate her daily habits.

Waking Up to an Empty Nest

When her four sons (Samuel, John, Joseph and Daniel) moved out, and her acting gigs paused just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Heaton found herself with an abundance of unstructured time.

“Right before the pandemic, my children had left home, and I wasn’t working. The things that had always anchored me — my family and my work — were gone,” Heaton told Woman’s World. “I started thinking, ‘What am I supposed to do today?’”

Without her usual lifelines of work and parenting to keep her busy, she found herself casually drinking throughout the evening.

“A glass of wine while cooking became wine with dinner, wine while cleaning up, and wine while watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!” Heaton said. “One night I realized I had almost finished an entire bottle by myself.”

The Power of Prayer

It wasn’t long before she realized something needed to change.

“I was thinking about alcohol differently,” she said. “I said a prayer: ‘God, I think you want me to stop drinking. I would be willing to stop, but you have to make it happen because I can’t. I’m willing, but I’m unable.’”

The universe seemingly answered her plea the very next day.

“I was with my sons and their friends, and I couldn’t pronounce the word ‘tradition.’ I tried three times. My youngest son said, ‘That’s great, Mom. You can’t even speak.’ I was completely mortified,” she continued. “The next morning I said, ‘Okay, God. Message received.’ That was eight years ago.”

Now, eight years sober, she’s focusing her energy on Solubrae, her own line of non-alcoholic wine.

Keeping it Real About Motherhood

In addition to her sobriety, Heaton has also shared the anxieties she faced as a first-time mother in her mid-30s.

In a post on X, Heaton recalled how doctors told her that her eldest son had an “extremely high chance” of having Down syndrome following a prenatal blood test. She explained that she declined further testing because abortion was never an option for her, and her son was ultimately born without the condition.

She also admitted to battling frightening, hormone-induced intrusive thoughts during his first few months of life.

“I kept having weird ideations of violent things happening to him,” she wrote. “I had enough knowledge to realize it was a hormonal thing. I asked for prayer in my mom’s group to deal with it. It eventually subsided,” she continued. “I subsequently had three more babies — I was 40 years old at the time of my fourth pregnancy.”

Whether she’s talking about overcoming addiction or surviving the scary realities of new motherhood, Heaton continues to prove she isn’t afraid to keep things totally real with her fans.
