Anna Faris is sharing how quitting drinking shifted her perspective on health, happiness, and her Hollywood legacy.

On a recent episode of Chelsea Handler’s podcast, Dear Chelsea, Faris said that she decided to stop drinking alcohol after noticing how it was affecting her mental health.

During their conversation, Handler pointed out Faris’ brighter outlook and asked if it was connected to her choice to put the glass down. The 49-year-old actress was quick to agree.

“Yeah, I do. One of the many gifts,” Faris said. “It turns out there’s a correlation between drinking and depression, for me, for sure. I had to take a step back and not self-sabotage.”

How Hormones Have Helped

Faris also attributes a better-regulated hormonal system to her improved mental health.

“I finally got on hormones, a hormone patch,” Faris said. “It made a huge difference for me.”

Handler related to the struggle. Recalling a time when she had “absolutely no estrogen,” the host admitted the experience triggered “the closest I’ve ever had to what people describe as depression.”

“It’s the lowest I’ve ever felt without having a solution, and it’s almost like a loss of hopefulness,” Handler said. However, within 24 hours of increasing her dosage, the comedian said she began to feel hopeful again.

Embracing Her Comedy Roots

Stepping away from alcohol and balancing her hormones helped Faris view her career in a different way — specifically her complicated feelings about being known as a comedic actress.

She landed her big break playing Cindy Campbell in the 2000 spoof film Scary Movie. Looking back, she admitted she spent her 20s envying actors who found fame through different, non-comedic roles. For years, being a comedy star felt like an “ill-fitting shoe.”

“Along the way and in the arrogance of my 20s, I did feel envious of people who got their big break in a different way, and I think that is a really ungracious idea,” Faris said. “It was only in the last year, I think, that I really started to notice and appreciate if and when people recognized me, they would usually smile,” she continued.

The actress is currently back on set filming the 2026 Scary Movie revival, and her mindset couldn’t be more different today.

While working on the new film, Faris said she had an emotional moment with Marlon Wayans. She told Handler she’d always regretted not being able to formally express her gratitude to his brother, Keenan Ivory Wayans, who directed the original 2000 project.

“I was like, ‘Marlon, I need you to know I am so f***ing grateful to be here. I can’t believe I get to thank you in person,’” she said, realizing just how much the comedy world has given her.
