Olivia Munn is reframing how she views her body after surviving back-to-back health battles.

In a recent interview with USA Today, the 46-year-old actress shared how she rebuilt her confidence following a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery for Luminal B breast cancer. The diagnosis came right as she was recovering from a year of severe postpartum anxiety after welcoming her son Malcolm in 2021.

“I was hoping and expecting to bounce back to what I looked like nine months before,” Munn said, “and that didn’t happen.”,” Munn said.

Redefining Her Style

Weight gain and physical changes from breastfeeding left her feeling frustrated, “and I feel like that was the thing that I had the hardest time figuring out. All of my clothes didn’t fit anymore,” Munn explainedshe continued.

Instead of forcing herself into ill-fitting outfits, Munn adapted by being “more intentional” and choosing comfortable, timeless pieces that fit her new shape. But just as she felt like she was emerging “out of that fog and that psychosis,” she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent five surgeries that changed her relationship with fashion.

“And when I got to a place, like after my four surgeries at that point, I just had this moment where I told myself, ‘I am tired of not dressing the way that I want to dress. I don’t know how I’m gonna do it, but I’m tired of not of not feeling like myself every day,’” she said, adding, “And I just made the decision after going through years of back-to-back battles that I’m just not going to spend the rest of my life feeling like I don’t have the outfit to wear. And that was a big motivator for me to be like, ‘I’m going to figure this out. I’m going to be happy.’”

Seeing Her Scars as ‘Battle Wounds’

Learning to feel at ease in her body was an ongoing process, particularly during public appearances and photoshoots.

Before going public with her diagnosis, she relied on longer hairstyles and tattoo makeup to cover the indentations on her side where lymph nodes were removed. Eventually, she changed how she viewed those physical reminders, recognizing the strength behind them.

“I remind myself that those are battle wounds,” Munn previously told People. “And I can show them what I want, and I can hide them when I want.”

She reached a major turning point while filming a Skims campaign shoot that benefited the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation.

“We were in the middle of the shoot, and we were changing an outfit that could see more of my scars, and the makeup artist was touching up my scars, and we got to my double mastectomy scars, and they were just really hard to cover up,” Munn told Savannah Guthrie during a 2024 interview on the Today show. “And then I was looking in the mirror, and I just thought, ‘I’m done being insecure about my scars.’”
