Selena Gomez credits her husband, Benny Blanco, with bringing out a much more confident, self-assured side of her.
In a new People cover story, the 34-year-old Rare Beauty founder said she’s finally taking the time to stop and “appreciate” her life. After years of moving at what “felt like it was 90 miles an hour,” Gomez explained that she’s balancing her busy schedule with quiet nights staying in and watching “cheesy movies” with Blanco.
Adopting Her Husband’s Healthy Habits
Gomez said the biggest lessons she’s taken from her husband are to “stop overthinking and be a little bit more confident.” Instead of forcing her to change, she said he simply leads by example.
“That’s something he doesn’t pressure me to be,” she said. “He just inspires me to be that.”
She called him a “joyful human” who is fun and spontaneous. More than anything, she loves having a partner who listens and accepts her exactly as she is on any given day.
“It just feels so wonderful to have a partner that genuinely listens and meets you right where you are, whatever that mood or day looks like,” she added. “I need him, and I love him.”
Getting Through the Dark Days
When discussing her own mental health journey, Gomez shared the advice she holds onto when she finds herself in a dark place.
“The honest truth is, when you’re stuck in a mental health cycle, you can’t hear advice,” she admitted. “What I would say to people is to hold on and to know that it’s okay to not be perfect. It’s okay to feel all of the feelings, confusing or not.”
She noted that her attitude toward her own mental health is “constantly growing,” explaining that she relies on dialectical behavior therapy and strong coping skills to stay grounded. Putting in that work every single day has paid off.
“I think I see the light every day. I just want to get closer and closer and keep chasing it,” she shared. “I don’t think it’s even worth worrying about what my past looked like, and that’s the best feeling.”
