Our hearts are heavy this week following the devastating news that actress Hayden Panettiere died on Sunday at just 36 years old. With the investigation into her sudden death still ongoing, fans and peers are still just beginning to express their grief and shock — as well as the love and admiration for a star taken too soon.

‘A Beautiful Phoenix Rising’

In a statement released to the press, her father, Skip Panettiere, asked for privacy and remembered his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

Her Hollywood peers are also mourning the talent she brought to the screen. Viola Davis, who starred with Hayden in the 2016 film Custody, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram

“I wish the world had more time with you because I had a burning curiosity about who you were becoming,” Davis wrote. “I saw this beautiful Phoenix rising from the ashes. Your tests became your testimony, and your testimony became your legacy. You will be remembered.”

The screen actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, also released a statement saying their hearts are with her family and daughter.

Hayden’s Brave Transparency About Motherhood

Her on-screen roles defined her career, but for many women, Hayden’s lasting impact was her unfiltered honesty about the agonizing reality of postpartum depression (PPD)

In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, released this past May, Hayden opened up about the terrifying emotional void that followed the birth of her daughter, Kaya.

“It wasn’t panic that was sitting in my chest,” she wrote. “It was nothing. A total blackout of emotion, like my soul was dead. I wasn’t myself, yet the problem was I didn’t know what I was supposed to be.”

Desperate to feel the “happy hormones” she was missing, the actress admitted she began relying heavily on alcohol just to make it through early call times on the Nashville set.

Knowing that she needed to prioritize her recovery, Hayden decided to sign over full custody of her then-3-year-old daughter to her ex, Wladimir Klitschko.

“Although I miss Kaya so much my heart aches, I know how blessed I am to be her mom,” she wrote in her memoir. “She is the greatest gift of my life.”

Hayden’s story is a reminder of just how complex and difficult postpartum depression and addiction can be. As we remember her bright light and beautiful talent, we’re keeping her daughter, her family, and her legacy in our thoughts.
